Why Develop Personal Resilience?
Developing Personal Resilience is central to and proven to improve business performance. It integrates the key concepts of:
- Personal Effectiveness
- Communication Excellence
- Relationship Management
- Building Mental Toughness
Mental Toughness is defined as a quality which determines, in some part, how individuals perform when exposed to stressors, pressure and challenge.
It is a set of skills, beliefs and attitudes, all of which can be developed and changed in order to affect our thinking, feeling and behaviour.
Personal resilience builds confidence in our abilities and helps us pursue our aims, goals and objectives with relentless persistence. It can play a significant role in determining how an individual manages stress as well as being a key factor in enabling individuals to improve their performance in the workplace as well as impact on their general sense of wellbeing and happiness.
Personal resilience consists of 4 core components, two of which have sub factors. These include:
Control
- Life Control – the extent to which you believe you shape what happens to you
- Emotional Control – the extent to which you keep your emotions in check
Commitment – the extent to which you make promises and set targets and keep them!
Challenge – How you see challenge and change – is it an opportunity or is to a threat?
Confidence
- in abilities – the extent to which you have self-belief & don’t need external validation
- interpersonal – the extent to which you are prepared to express your confidence.
Research indicates that those with stronger personal resilience are able to bounce back after set-backs, manage stress effectively and sustain high levels of performance in the workplace.
The 8 steps to building Personal Resilience……
1) How ‘tough’ are you? Have you got what it takes to meet the challenges of the 21st Century
Research shows that there is a significant relationship between Mental Toughness and:
- A positive approach to, and engagement with, challenging activity
- Performance – doing more and doing it better
- Aspirations – the desire to improve and to achieve, and
- Stick-ability – seeing things through to completion.
This one day workshop introduces the concept and characteristics of Mental Toughness, why it’s important in order to get ahead and how it can be developed and learned.
2) Take control! How to be taken seriously and get what you want
Get your mission straight then set the wheels in motion in order to achieve your goals. Becoming more self-aware and realising that you are responsible for the results you get in life is one of the first steps to doing things differently.
Many people are unaware of the impact that they are having on others. They give away their personal power and become frustrated with the response they get from others. This workshop looks at how to build a positive self-belief and confidence in your strengths and capabilities and how to reflect this in everything you say and do.
3) How to stay positive when the going gets tough
If anything is certain, everything will change! How you respond to change is down to you. This workshop looks at the difference between those people who come through change smelling of roses and those who end up in the thorn bush!
Looking at how to build a positive mind set, challenge your negative thoughts, manage your emotions effectively and behave with confidence and optimism on a consistent basis, regardless of what is going on around you.
4) Develop the habits of success and excellence
Are your habits, actions and behaviour in line with what you want in life? Learn what successful people do differently and develop the courage and confidence to follow in their footsteps.
- Develop the right attitude – success is largely a matter of attitude
- Challenge your beliefs – if you believe you can or you believe you can’t, you’re right!
- Programme your mind for achieving your goals
- Decide what you want then commit to making it happen
5) What to do when it all gets a bit too much?
When the pressure gets too much you can feel stressed and out of control.
As a consequence you can feel overwhelmed, anxious, angry and irritated which left unchecked can impact negatively on others as well as on your health potentially causing high blood pressure, heart disease and niggling colds and illness.
Everyone suffers from stress at some point and it’s a question understanding what triggers the stress and how to build practical effective strategies that enable you to manage pressure and minimise stress before you blow a fuse!
6) Build Outstanding Gravitas
Gravitas involves developing the qualities of personal presence and charisma so that you are noticed, listened to and respected. It is about developing inner confidence and authenticity that is reflected in a positive body language.
Learn how to speak with conviction and use your facial expression and body language to make others sit up, listen and take you seriously.
7) Fit to fight or fit to drop?
Mental Toughness requires that you have a healthy body as well as a healthy mind. This means eating healthily, undertaking regular activity/exercise, drinking in moderation, taking time to relax, having fun and generally looking after yourself.
This workshop outlines simple lifestyle changes that you can make to ensure that you have the energy, good health and wellbeing to achieve optimum performance.
8) Develop influence, power and prestige
The most successful people in life are those who have developed the skill of flexing their communication to the widest variety of personalities and types of people. This is a skill that can be learned and perfected which leads to being able to develop strong lasting relationships with others.
