Talent Management
Ever since Jim Collins suggested in his epic “From Good to Great’, that there is a ‘war for Talent’, companies, academics and practitioners have created or developed a view of Talent Management based partly on their area of expertise, interest or practise.
Most of those agree that Talent resides within people and it has led to the proposition that ‘People are our greatest asset’.
Continuum’s view of Talent suggests a slightly different approach and focus.
For us, ‘Talent’ is an Asset that exists at the right time and in the right place. In summary, people are only the greatest asset when the conditions are right – otherwise they can be far from an asset…!
What interests us is the extent to which ‘Talent’ creates value for a range of key stakeholders – this, in turn allows us to identify and determine the ‘value of Talent’ itself.
The Continuum framework of Talent Management is based on the concept that all talent has Potential within itself and creates Value as an output which can be built, sustained, improved or, conversely, wasted, destroyed or limited.
Key stakeholders in the business play a role in either building or limiting either the Potential or the Value Creation and the model itself serves to identify this holistic approach and suggest methods to derive greater value from the overall system of Talent Management itself.
We believe that the process has a two key outputs – the creation of value for the organisation as well as for
the individual – these should be equal in importance. The two enabling areas are HR – who operate and add value through their processes, ensuring value flow to and from the individual and organisation – and Line Managers who harness the individual talent on a day to day basis and align it to the needs of the organisation.
The alignment of process and value from the ‘Talent’ to the organisation and its subsequent re-investment and regeneration creates the agenda and measurement criteria for the Talent Management process as a vital and vibrant part of the core Human Capital systems within the organisation
